INTRODUCTION TO THE LEED EXAMS:
- Purpose of the Exams
- Format of the Exams
- The Secret Code
- Acquire the Skills
Planet Principles online LEED exam prep products will do more than just teach basic concepts covered on the LEED exams, they will prepare you for practically everything that’s on the exams.
We know this sounds too good to be true, but we mean it. We are able to do this because our LEED exam prep courses and practice tests cover the underlying principles behind all of the questions on the LEED exams to not only provide preparation but also to provide the long-term knowledge necessary to help you succeed in the ever-growing green economy.
Let’s take a look at how the LEED exams are composed. As Sun Tzu once wrote in the Art of War, “Know thine enemy.” Before you begin your LEED exam prep you need to know firsthand the way the LEED exams are put together.
Purpose of the Exams:
The LEED Green Associate (LEED GA) exam is designed to measure your skill, knowledge, and overall ability to carryout concepts and strategies that are integral to green design, construction, and operations. To achieve the LEED GA credential, your LEED exam prep should focus on “big picture” concepts and strategies that are essential to ensure the success of a green building project.
The LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP) specialty exams are designed to assess your understanding and knowledge of the LEED Rating Systems applicable under each specialty exam and will test your ability to facilitate the certification process for those LEED Rating Systems. For instance, in order to achieve the LEED AP: Building Design + Construction (LEED AP: BD+C) credential your LEED exam prep should focus on the LEED New Construction, LEED Core & Shell, and LEED Schools rating systems as you will need to prove in-depth knowledge of those rating systems to pass the LEED AP BD+C exam. Once again, your individualized LEED exam prep will vary depending on the LEED AP credential you want to achieve. You can choose from five different options:
1. LEED AP: Building Design + Construction
2. LEED AP: Operations + Maintenance
3. LEED AP: Interior Design + Construction
4. LEED AP: Neighborhood Development
5. LEED AP: Homes
Format of the Exams:
Each LEED exam is comprised of 100 randomly delivered multiple-choice questions and you are given a maximum time of 2 hours per exam. The Planet Principles online LEED exam prep study plan will adjust depending on whether you want to take the LEED GA exam and the LEED AP specialty exam in succession on the same day, or on separate days.
Please note before starting your LEED exam prep: You must FIRST pass the LEED GA exam before you are allowed to proceed in taking a LEED AP specialty exam. The choice to take the exams on separate days or on the same day is based on your individual preference. If your goal is to achieve only the LEED Green Associate credential then taking the second (LEED AP) exam is not necessary.
The Secret Code:
Doing well on the LEED exam includes knowledge on the “secret code” in which each LEED exam is scored. The LEED exam, like all tests that use the Angoff Method, is based on psychometrics, the peculiar science concerned with creating “standardized” tests. For a test to be “standardized” it must encompass three traits:
- Reliable – in other words, a test taker who takes a exam should get approximately the same score if he or she takes the exam a second time (assuming, of course, that he or she does not use Planet Principles LEED exam prep products during the intervening period).
- Structured – this is closely related to the first point, but it must test the same concepts on each test.
- Create a Bell Curve – when a pool of test takers scores are plotted on a graph the results must form a bell curve, in other words, some people will do really well (such as those that use Planet Principles LEED exam prep products) on the test and others will do very poorly, but a great majority will score somewhere in the middle.
What this all boils down to is that in order to be a standardized test, the LEED exam has to be extremely predictable. And this exactly what makes the LEED exam and other standardized tests so coachable, which is why Planet Principles LEED exam prep products are able to identify the specific concepts that are tested on over-and-over so you are fully prepared on exam day. Plus, the LEED exam must contain hard questions that most people will get wrong – otherwise it wouldn’t be able to create its bell curve. This means your LEED exam prep should teach you to identify such “tricky” questions in which the wrong answer will seem more appealing than the correct answer to a larger percentage of test takers. Fortunately, these tricky questions are predicable (this is what we mean by the secret code) and our LEED exam prep courses include an “exam tips” section that teaches you how to recognize and ace them.
